How to Choose The Right Backpack
What kind of backpack do you need? What fabric? What capacity? What features? Are you going for a day hike, or a week-end outing, or a week in the mountains? It may be that you need a different backpack for each situation, or you could choose a mid-weight pack suitable for all occasions. Lets take a look at what should be considered and what features the best backpacks offer. Backpacks have three categories; external frame, internal frame, and frameless. The trend is away from the external frame because designers have come up with ways to make the internal frame backpack cooler, a major drawback in the past. The internal frame packs are lighter, easier to balance, less cumbersome and more comfortable. How much pack do you need? Backpacks are measured in cubic inches and you want the smallest pack that will do the job. The size will depend on how much gear you have and the length of trip. The rule of thumb for mid-weight backpacks on a weekend trip is 2,000 to 4,000 cu. in. and for a longer trip, 4,000 to 7,000 cu.in. Ultralight backpacks for a weekend trip, 2,400 to 2,800 cu. in., and for a longer trip, 3,300 to 4,000 cu. in. Other features to consider: 1. You can use a larger pack if the compression straps work well enough to adjust a smaller load to the right position for good balance. 2. Choose the fabric according to how the pack will be used. Lightweight fabric is fine for open country but may not be suitable for climbing or moving through thick underbrush. 3. If you plan on sharing a backpack with someone else, get a pack with adjustable fit. 4. For women, try a pack designed for women as well as the unisex type. 5. Try a backpack with a hydration system. It is more convenient than a water bottle. 6. Stove-it pockets are cinch-type pouches outside the backpack allowing access to items without having to go into the main pack. The best ultralight backpacks will weigh between 18 and 37 ounces and can carry enough gear for a multi-day trip. It will be water-resistant and reinforced at stress points. The best off-trail backpacks will be waterproof, using watertight zippers, welded seams and coated nylon. It will have good balance even with loads up to 50 pounds or more and its large capacity allows longer trips. The best backpacks for heavy loads can handle loads of 65 pounds or more with confort and balance and its large capacity can handle a winter trip. In summary make an informed decision about your backpack purchase, plan your trip and enjoy the great outdoors.
